Creating a functional space for your family

When it comes to creating a child-friendly suite, there’s no need to compromise on style.

As one of the first developers to introduce a children’s playroom as an amenity space in a highrise condominium, Menkes strives to ensure condo living is a family-friendly as can be.

This week, we teamed up with Kyle Gordon, Interior Designer with DS Interiors - and designer of Harbour Plaza’s fabulous kid’s play room - to show us that when it comes to creating a child-friendly suite, there’s no need to compromise on style.

Below, Kyle shares a few tricks of the trade when it comes to designing a space that you and your little ones can enjoy. She also shares how you can maximize a smaller space to ensure it’s functional, beautiful, and flexible to meet the needs of your growing family. Those with babies and young children can appreciate how quickly a home can start to look like a daycare when you add toys, gear and general kiddie paraphernalia to the mix, so check out Kyle’s helpful tips.

Opt for stylish storage pieces.
Plan for ample storage to house toys, books, and baby necessities (diapers, wipes etc). Some of her favourites include: Zara Home Baskets, Ikea Kallax System

Look for furniture with hidden storage compartments.
A plush ottoman, with under-lid storage, offers soft corners and doubles as a toy chest. Check out this round table with lid from Zara Home.

Easy to clean, stylish surfaces are key!
The moms behind the fabulous Canadian line Play with Pieces have mastered function and style. Select from their fabulous line of wipeable, printed playmats to infuse some whimsy into your space.

Protect the floors in your suite.
There’s no surprise that mealtime is a mess. Whether you have carpet or beautiful hardwood flooring, keeping your space stain free is always a plus. The Nuby Floor Mat is a must, and with its clear plastic finish, it just blends in. Even better, it doubles as a play mat on any surface.

Wallpaper is a great way to add texture and colour to a space.
Vinyl is an amazing option for its durability and wipeable surface. Think spaghetti on the walls… no problem!

Functional wall art is essential.
Take advantage of your existing wall space and put it to good use. Picture ledges like these IKEA ones are a fabulous way to display books and artwork.
